I had a bit of time in the shed this week so I thought I’d try my hand at a couple of bowls. A nice learning experience and a bit of a change from pens. – First bowl is Blackwood (110 x 20 mm). I had a bit of cranky grain on the inside so I tried a Decorating Elf and added a bit of texture. – The second bowl is a piece of Red Gum sleeper (150 x 45 mm) that I got off a friend. Both bowls are finished with Ubeaut Aussie Oil.
I’ll have to try and spend a bit more time on bowls so I can upgrade my skills a bit.
I finished off this bowl a couple of weeks ago and I finally got around to showing it here. It’s made with a hunk of Blackwood that I had picked up somewhere. It’s about 200 mm Dia and 50 mm High. It’s finished with several coats of Ubeaut Aussie Oil. Still need to put a couple more coats of oil on it yet.
Had an amazing time at the Gold Coast last week attending Turnfest. It really is an eye opener to see what people are capable of doing with a few bits of wood and a lathe. It has inspired me to try a few more things this year, and to push myself into learning more about wood turning.
Next year is the 15th Turnfest and there are some amazing turners coming from around the world to show there skills and pass their knowledge onto other turners. I’m already booked and counting down the days.
Now I just have to find a bit more time to get into the shed more and start turning wood into sawdust.
Had a friend drop off a couple of pieces of Yellow Box the other day (thanks Sam). Nice looking wood but unfortunately it’s not for me. He wants me to make him up a couple of bowls from it.
Just waiting a little while for it to acclimatise to the local environment a bit and then I’ll see what I can do. There’s a bit of splitting on the ends so I’m hoping it doesn’t go in too far and I can get a decent sized blank out of them for the bowls. Keep watching for an update
Well I’ve been busy in the shop again this week getting more bits ready to take to the markets this today. I had a pretty successful day today at the Huskisson Markets. The weather was great and there was a very good crowd. Had a lot of interest in my stuff and managed to sell off a few pens.
Now I’m back into the shed to replace what I’ve sold. At least it’s keeping me busy and I’m getting to do some different things.
Next Sunday I’ll be setting up a stall at the Wandandian Woodchop event. Here’s hoping I have a successful day there as well.
Went to Aldi’s the other day and bought one of there glass display cases. Lennie was getting upset about the amount of wood things I had lying around so we decided to get somewhere I could show them off.
It went together fairly easily and at least it keeps my bits and pieces together and out of the way. I look forward to slowly filling it up with some of the things I make.
